With the arrival of the
railroad
in 1868 at adjacent Oakdale, and the start of the Oakdale estate
era, the name was changed to Great River. Most of the tycoons
who built nearby in the late 19th Century belonged to the
Southside Sportsmen's Club, which had a private rail stop called
``The Club'' at Great River. The first Great River rail depot
went up in
1897.
Today there are 509 households in Great River.

The hamlet of Great River was formerly known as Youngsport. Here, Erastus Youngs built and repaired boats which he launched in the Connetquot River. The Youngs family lived, in the 1840's, about one and a half miles south of the Montauk Highway on Great River Road. It is known that Mrs. W. K. Vanderbilt purchased the Youngs home and donated the property to the Trinity Parish in Brooklyn, New York to be used as a summer camp for city children. It was known as "Seaside Camp".
